He is Dancehall’s most esoteric, yet, unconcealed weapon. Daniel “Chino” McGregor is a paradox in plain sight. Armed with potent lyrics, a velvety-smooth voice, street cred, an undeniable mystique that drives female fans wild: Chino is unquestionably a man for all seasons.

Chino, who was born on the 12th of February 1983, is the son of Jamaican music legend, Freddie McGregor. Surrounded by countless records, endless background harmonies and innumerable instruments, it’s understandable why he developed a strong inclination toward music at a very early age. In fact, so caught up was he that he seized every opportunity to observe and learn from the best in the industry: namely, legends including the late Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffith, Judy Mowatt and Gregory Isaac, in addition to Dancehall icons such as Bounty Killer, Beenie Man and more. These interactions resulted in a comprehensive knowledge of recording and production techniques which would later work in his advantage.

But first: here’s a rewind.

Chino’s musical ascendancy started at age nine while he was still a student at the Vaz Preparatory School. There, he joined their choir and ever since then, Chino has seen singing as his destiny.

The young Chino soon broke barriers by performing at a slate of premier events – and recalls his most memorable performance happening when he was 12 years old and got the opportunity to sing in front of the (then) Prime Minister PJ Patterson at Jamaica House. A few short years later, Chino continued to add dimension to his portfolio as a student at the Wolmer’s High School: there, the multi-talented Chino also gained experience as a selector for the sound system Omega Disco.

After graduating from High School, Chino travelled to the USA where he worked with Slip N Slide Records – home to notable US artistes such as Trina and Trick Daddy. Upon returning to Jamaica, Chino was determined to face the music, so to speak. Here he embarked upon his career as a rapper, using the name of ‘Cappuccino’. In no time, he was asked by fellow artiste “Bryan” (brother of Papa San) to contribute a rap verse to the song Joy. Ergo, started his climb to Dancehall’s summit.

Other important songs that aided in propelling his career were two collaborations with Kiprich, namely, Leggo Di Bwoy and Gimmi Di Gyal. The former became a stellar hit and went number one on the Jamaican charts, which resulted in heavy video rotation and airplay both locally and internationally.

From singer to sound-system operator, to rapper, back to singer, to singjay. Chino has no intentions of being categorized; instead, he sees himself as an unconfined musical artiste: one who also plays a myriad of instruments including the guitar, drums, piano and bass. In addition to all that, Chino still finds the time to write, co-write and has produced tracks for artistes such as Daville, T.O.K, Wayne Marshall, Elephant Man, Kiprich, Delly Ranx and of course his father, Freddie McGregor.

Yet another major milestone in his career was a collaboration with his father, There’s a Reward For Me on the Grammy-nominated album Anything for You. His career has evolved even further since then; a few years ago he released his debut album, Unstoppable in addition to a slew of singles: Inna di Club (on the ‘12 gauge’ riddim), the smash hit Redbull And Guinness and Ghetto Whisky both feat. Delly Ranx, Formula, Do So Fah (on the ‘Breaking News’ riddim), and Gyal Ting (on Roach’s ‘Mad Ting’ riddim) just to name a few, which were monster hits in the dancehalls across the island and overseas.

More recently, Chino has doused the local and international scenes with a bucket of hits including: Pon Yuh Head, Protected, From Mawning, Ruff It Up, Gal Dem Waah Mi Style It Fi Dem, more recently and more.

In addition, he is one of the official faces of Coca-Cola Zero in Jamaica. This multifaceted artiste has toured major countries and their cities, including: New York, Miami, Alabama, Mississippi and London, numerous parts of Europe, Africa, Japan, Bermuda, U.S Virgin Islands in addition to various Caribbean Islands.

Chino, who completed a three month US and European tour alongside his father and other Big Ship artistes in the summer of ’09 plans to release two albums this summer, Never Change, for the Japanese market and another for the US.

Also this year Chino released a number of singles, which still continue to dominate the reggae/dancehall market including: Before Dem Gone, Rave We A Rave featuring Konshens, Mus Come Back and others. Undoubtedly, Daniel “Chino” McGregor continues to keep his eye on the prize: to not only steer the “Big Ship” successfully into the future, but also confirm that this musical mastermind is in fact UNSTOPPABLE.

Marion ‘Lady Saw’ Hall, born 12th of July in Saint Mary, Jamaica, is known primarily as “The Queen of the Dancehall.” She is the first female deejay to win a Grammy Award and to be certified a triple-platinum artist. She is also the first woman to headline dancehall shows outside her native Jamaica. Marion was born in the summer of 1972 in Galina, parish of Saint Mary. As a child she was a tomboy, sold fruits, and raced wooden karts. At the age of 15, she took the name Lady Saw after the famous Jamaican Deejay Tenor Saw, whose style she is said to emulate. She quit a sewing job at The Free Zone on the outskirts of Kingston to pursue music full time.

Similar to other Jamaican artists, Lady Saw started her career on local sound systems. This is a good school if one wants to prepare to eventually record in studio sessions. The Jamaican recording industry is a hard one, and it is of great importance for an artist to have their act together once they enter the studio. Lady Saw is an artist with the abilities to deliver the goods and did so from day one till present! Saw gave great inspiration and empowered female artists in the reggae scene and beyond. She is, and has for the last 15 + years been the number one female dancehall star without doubt, even with strong competition from younger talents like Cecile, Tanya Stephens, and Spice on the Reggae Music scene.

Saw is a consistent hit with the general population. She has tried to tame her lyrics but her audiences expect and demand slackness. Her stage persona as Lady Saw is a distinct contrast to her true self – Marion Hall. When she was younger, Saw sang in her church choir, a far cry from the sexually explicit lyrics and stage antics she is known and has been criticized for. Saw is mother to three adopted children, two sons and one daughter and her favorite activities include cooking, gardening, and taking care of her children.

Following her release from VP Records, Marion formed her own independent label called, Divas Records! Now in a partnership with Toasting Music, she will be releasing her latest album entitled, “MY WAY” on September 7, 2010. Additionally, Saw is currently working on a project featuring works from her alter ego ‘Marion Hall’ which will be released in 2011. Look out for both of these projects because the Queen is back and she means business!

(VP RECORDS, NEW YORK) – Reggae star Gyptian continues to sizzle this year as he now joins forces with the iconic Mary J. Blige. Gyptian will be breaking from his tour schedule to join the R&B queen on the England leg of her UK tour. He takes the stage on November 2 at The O2 Arena in London, the same venue Michael Jackson was slated to headline for his infamous ‘This Is It’ concert. Gyptian then heads with Blige to the LG Arena in Birmingham on November 3, before resuming his own tour. Gyptian has been touring consistently since releasing his current album Hold You this summer, even joining Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Nas on several dates of their recent ‘Distant Relatives’ tour in the US.

Gyptian was enlisted for Blige’s new single, “Anything You Want,” which is expected to be on her new album. The reggae-infused track also features Busta Rhymes and has been receiving steady airplay since its release in early September.

This exciting concert collaboration was secured by Planet Reggae, the new booking division of VP Records/Greensleeves Records, with AEG, the world’s #1 concert production company.

“These are the opportunities that come about by having the #1 record label in reggae enter the live-touring business,” states Neil Robertson, head of Planet Reggae. “Our brand lends credibility and comfort for the major international talent buyers. When you combine that with a great artist like Gyptian and a manager like Ivor Ruddock, who both understand the bigger picture, you can expect more high profile opportunities which are good for the whole genre.”

Gyptian has been heating up the UK scene recently, with his performance at BBC Radio 1Xtra Live in late September, and will return on October 20 for the MOBO Awards, where he’s nominated for ‘Reggae Artist of the Year.’

Dancehall Reggae recording artist, Esco aka Esco da Shocker is the son of veteran Jamaican disc jockey, Errol ‘ET’ Thompson (former Wailers backing singer, Marcia Griffiths is his step-mom), Esco (Matthew Thompson) is the product of a major reggae bloodline. Esco’s own production credits included co-produced material on nearly every big rhythm to come out of Jamaica such as: the Dem Time Deh and the Bullet Riddim collection among others. Key hits recorded with former partner in musical madness included charting favorites; “Tuk In Yuh Belly” and “Wine Up Pon Har”.

In 2008, 1-1-1 Productions allowed Esco to focus on new Riddim projects. Esco premiered his talents with the ‘one off’ track “Drunken Dance”, followed by “Badman Skank” for Future Fambo. The first Riddim project released THE SHOW GOES ON Riddim contains songs by: Deva Bratt with “Do It Hot”, Esco aka The Shocker with “Control Dis Ting”, Fresh Money’s “Horny Anyone”, Delly Ranks featuring Smurf’s song “Head A Leak”, Future Fambo with his “Fren Ova Gal”, budding songstress Malica with “Hot Gal Step Out”, Wayne Marshall’s “She Nah Come” and more.

Esco’s second Riddim project was titled 40-4 PLAY. The Riddim features songs from; Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Esco, Future Fambo featuring Mr. Easy, Lady Saw, Wayne Marshall and more. ESCO has been grinding in the studio creating a variety of sounds; some songs are laid back with strong foundational influences, others are more contemporary with a competitive baritone delivery that stands strong against any popular deejay and is an extension of the path already laid with previous works. His solo tracks allow his fan base to get the full breadth and scope of his writing and lyrical abilities on the mic. “God Is Love” from the Natural Breeze Riddim by Open Ear Music released the winter of 2007 demonstrated a distinctly unexpected level of versatility. Esco was also featured in the Riddim’s video medley. This new sound for Esco was truly embraced throughout the Reggae community worldwide and resonated with his new fan base in Europe aiding the effect of his winter 2007 tour with Wayne Marshall. Keeping with this spiritual vein; “Wow” from Natural Bridge Records’ Sea Breeze Riddim. Esco also teamed up with musician/producer Mario Lawrence to create material that reflects this social conscious spiritual nexus for Mario’s Muzik Factory.

As a Dancehall Esco is still catering to the clubs with songs like; “Dun Dem Credit” featuring Fresh on Seanizzle Records’ Creepa Riddim. Esco’s song “Don’t Hail We” from Irie FM’s own DJ Sunshine’s party Riddim Ghetto Wuk created by Christopher Birch. “Buss A Whine”, another recognizable single was actually a one off from Esco’s 1-1-1 Productions.

To keep the diversity going, Esco also continues to record collaborations within the Soca community. Several notable songs in the last year have included; “Wine Of My Dreams” on the Response Riddim produced by Johann Seaton of Sel Construction and “All Day RMX” with Shurwayne Winchester and Johnny King. Esco even joined Shurwayne Winchester to perform their song in front of an excited Soca crowd in Jamaica during the Carnival season.

By the end of 2009, Esco’s songs; “First Lady”, “Dirty Weave”, and “Full Force” were circulating and creating a new buzz. “First Lady” was a recording done with Mixmaster David out of Atlanta on his Money Year Riddim. “Dirty Weave” a playful party track, was produced but Chimmey Records on the Movie Star Riddim. These two songs were the backdrop for Esco’s latest medley video. As 2009 drew to a close, Esco was the unfortunate victim of a robbery that nearly resulted in kidnapping. This harrowing experience drew Esco closer to his purpose and much more reflective musically. The song “Wha Nuh Kill Yu” was one hundred percent inspired from the experience. Recording with a renewed zest, Esco delivered “Anytime You Call” produced by Open Ear Music, “Watch Dem” and on the Moonwalk Riddim. Esco has also been recording with Gang 5 Music and has two current releases “Highest Of Di Highest” and “More To Life”; both more spiritual in nature that are connecting with fans and DJs worldwide.

As 2010 unfolds, Esco has been fading out 1-1-1 Productions, by releasing the Mansions riddim from his Tall King Productions, a new brand that is more befitting to his identify. The Mansions riddim features recordings by; Alaine, Elephant Man, Etana, Gyptian, Jah Cure and more. His own song “Blessings” is already receiving wide ratings from Reggae DJs worldwide as it is solidifying his transition as a conscious solo dancehall artist.

Further, thanks to new relationships, Esco has been submitting production to major labels and projects such as Wyclef Jean’s upcoming album. Esco is also featured on the remix for “Weed fi Sale” by Wycelf Jean as heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=038IDCluUlQ Esco continues to record with Jamaica’s top producers, joining with new writers and focusing on preparing for his first solo album – ESCO da Shocker.

Reggae’s aural landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation since 2005 when cultural themes controlled the dancehall as deejays chanted praises to Jah Rastafari and wrote songs to uplift and inspire listeners. Many artists who attained notoriety espousing these fortifying concepts promptly abandoned them when the prevailing lyrical tide took a sharp detour towards graphic violence, gangster posing and the explicit, x-rated rhymes that now dominate the (dancehall) charts.

Despite the disturbing trend evidenced in several current dancehall hits, singjay/songwriter Junior Kelly remains true to making empowering reggae music, a mission he embarked on nearly 25 years ago. Five years after the release of Kelly’s critically acclaimed “Tough Life”, he returns with his much-anticipated fourth album for VP Records (his 8th album overall) “Red Pond”, which will be released on April 6th. The title “Red Pond”, like all of Kelly’s lyrics, was inspired by real life situations, particularly the conditions in his community of Frasers Content, Spanish Town.
“Red Pond is the nickname of the area where I was raised and still reside and there is a sinister meaning to that name,” explains Kelly who was born Keith Morgan on September 23, 1969 in Kingston. “We have seen a lot of violence and blood in that community, I see people dead in front of me yet I stick to my roots reggae and don’t fall for the peer pressure in the music business. Dropping this album when roots music is kind of on the back burner and naming it “Red Pond” is a testimony to my will to hold on to more tangible music, despite what I see all around me, because what kind of music can instill hope in your life other than roots music?”

It was Kelly’s roots reggae single “Love So Nice” that established him as a star throughout Jamaica in 2000. Kelly’s breakthrough song utilized the indelible bassline played by Aston “Familyman” Barrett on the rhythm to Bob Marley’s classic “Stir It Up”, as he pondered a question most people ask at least once: “If love so nice, tell me why it hurt so bad?” Kelly’s commanding juxtaposition of precisely timed, deejayed rhymes and melodic singing, coupled with his vivid storytelling abilities, took the song to the top of the Jamaican charts, a position it held for 15 weeks, making it the island’s longest charting number one tune for 2000.

Kelly’s stunning introductory album for VP Records “Love So Nice”, released on January 25, 2001 presented a diversity of songs, from the sufferers’ anthem “Hungry Days” to the hymn to herb “Boom Draw” to the melancholy brought about by a lost love on “Sunshine”, in addition to the hit title track, which created a demand for Kelly’s music throughout The Caribbean, North America and Europe.

However, it was not an overnight success story for the devout Rastafarian artist who released his first single “Over Her Body” in 1985 and struggled for nearly 15 years before making an impact in the reggae business. Kelly grew up surrounded by music: his grandfather and father both played the banjo, his mother sang in the church and his older brother Sylvester, a.k.a. Jim Kelly was a resident deejay with Kilimanjaro, one of Jamaica’s premier sound systems of the 80s and 90s; Jim regularly practiced his lyrical toasts in the family living room, which had a profound influence on his younger brother. The close-knit family was devastated in 1983 when Jim was murdered in a dispute over money, a tragedy witnessed by his younger brother. “I never expected my brother would die so early,” Kelly solemnly offers, “but I grow with music all around me so if I became anything else it would have been a surprise. Music took me on a journey that I’m realizing started from in the home, way back when.”
In November 2001, Kelly was in a serious car accident in Kingston, which left him with a punctured lung, five broken ribs and a fractured pelvis. Hospitalized for several days, he endured an intensive rehabilitation program and made a full recovery. As the decade went on, he released a succession of hit singles and two more albums for VP, “Smile” (2003) and “Tough Life”, furthering his renown as a skillful mediator between traditional roots music’s spirituality and social conscience and dancehall’s gritty everyday realism. However Kelly’s output is not as prolific as many of his contemporaries because he does not comply with every producer’s request to “voice” (record) him on their “riddims”, which is the cornerstone practice of the reggae/dancehall industry.

Instead, Kelly remains selective preferring to feel a connection towards a rhythm track before voicing on it. “Producers approach me on a monetary level asking how much would I charge to voice a song and I tell them what I can do is listen to your music and if it moves me, then we can work something out,” explains Kelly. “The joy you get from creating, money can’t buy that.” Kelly describes his collaboration with “Red Pond’s” primary producer Melbourne “George Dusty” Miller of the Fire House Crew as “the true essence of the creative process; we took an organic approach to music making, just recording songs without the confines of creating an album.” Created over a four-year period, “Red Pond” boasts an all star cast of Jamaica’s finest musicians whose synergistic efforts fashioned rich, multi textured one-drop rhythms which propel Kelly’s thoughtful lyrics into 15 triumphant selections that stir the soul as readily as they move the feet.

“Red Pond” commences with the jubilant “Celebrate Life” which advocates daily appreciation for the blessings that surround us. Love’s many facets are explored, from the enigmatic search for “Real Love” to the love for one’s father on “Papa’s Song” (featuring Ras Shiloh) and the all important love of self on the stirring, semi-acoustic “Believe In Yourself”, which Kelly has been singing in concert for a few years but hadn’t previously recorded. The poignant “African Child” was partially inspired by Kelly’s unforgettable 2003 visit to Haiti, the world’s first liberated black republic and the second independent nation in the Western Hemisphere. “I had never seen so much degradation, carnage and disenfranchised people, but despite what they don’t have, I never seen people that find a way to be happy,” Kelly recalled. “I saw women of all ages going up and down the hills to fetch buckets of water and I remember a 7 year old girl carrying water in a ceramic pail on her head. It was so rough there that I wished I could just adopt her and take her to Jamaica so her life could be a little better.”

With the assistance of singer Lukie D (of the great Jamaican vocal quartet L.U.S.T.) Kelly switches moods, lamenting the loss of his lady on the R&B flavored “She’s Gone”, while Queen Ifrica, speaking on behalf of neglected women everywhere, breaks down her reasons for ending an unfulfilling relationship as she joins Kelly on the true to life, lilting lovers rock tune “Too Late”. Kelly’s fiery, emotive vocal grit characterizes “Treacherous Waters” which warns of omnipresent danger and “Murderer” is a ferocious admonishment aimed at individuals who callously take lives, a tragic, all too frequent occurrence in the ghetto. The provocative words on “Nuthin’ Wrong With The World” inspired by the cruelty people display towards one another are further punctuated by an unrelenting bass and bold keyboard stabs. Kelly sings of the sufferers’ desire for a better life, devoid of violence on “Waan Lef’ De Ghetto” while his astonishing rapid fire rhymes forcefully detail the plight of the poor black population on the militant “Stumbling Blocks”: “When mi check out the source and what them enforce/send police officers to take what’s yours.” His dynamic scat-like singing urges action among his people while asking, “How Better Ah Go Come” “if racism, terrorism, and prejud-ism still anchor we down.”

Kelly offers a timely commentary on the tattered societal moral fiber as reflected in the current state of dancehall reggae on “Slackness”. The song’s substantial lyrics are offset by an engaging melody and rollicking ska beat that also honors Jamaica’s pioneering musicians. “I love the ska era, love the players,” says Kelly, “and this is my way of showing respect for all the works that them do to make things possible for younger artists.” The album concludes with the ultimately optimistic, biblically laced strugglers’ lament “One Bright Day”, which Kelly acknowledges can have various meanings depending on an individual’s hopes and aspirations.

For lovers of sophisticated, passionately crafted roots reggae, a bright day arrives with “Red Pond” as the depth and detail of Junior Kelly’s lyrics, coupled with his heartfelt, nuanced delivery, augurs well for the music’s future while solidifying his prominence among a new generation of Jamaican cultural standard bearers.
